Why Recycle Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste. Many items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle electrical equipment, it will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination, harming wildlife and also human health.

Discover the impact of reusing and recycling your electricals here

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with this symbol) in your bin.

The amount of electrical waste we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, which makes it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.

This increase is mainly down to:

  • The development of new technologies
  • Affluent society
  • Throw away lifestyle

Many electrical items can be recycled!

Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in the electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination.

Water and soil contamination can have a very harmful effect on the natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. Where landfill sites are situated near populated areas toxins from waste electrical goods can pollute soil and water supplies. This can cause problems to communities.

Many of the electrical items that we throw away can be repaired for re-use or recycled. Recycling items helps to save natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending waste electrical goods to landfill.

To minimise our impact on this earth and to protect the environment for future generations it is important that we are all aware of the consequences of our actions and how we can make a difference.

What is WEEE?

The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items.

How are we helping?

Our goal is to minimise the disposal of WEEE as unsorted municipal waste and work towards a greener future by collecting  like for like electrical items for correct separation, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal.

This means that we will accept any old electrical items that matches the new item purchased from a Scotsdales store, within 28 days of purchase and with valid proof of purchase.

The items we sell can vary throughout the year, if you are unsure if we’d be able to assist you, then please contact us on: 01223 842 777 prior to your visit to check whether we can accept your items.

We reserve the right to refuse an item that’s too heavy to be picked up by one person or for health & hygiene reasons.
