The History of the Scotsdales Charitable Foundation
Whilst the Scotsdales name has been a part of the local community over the past 50+ years, helping gardens grow across of Cambridgeshire, and gaining a reputation as the place for horticultural knowledge, our affiliated trust is a more recent addition.
The Scotsdales Charitable Foundation came to fruition in the summer of 2007 when the then Chairman, David Rayner and our present Managing Director, Caroline Owen sought out a way to support the Cambridge Cancer Centre whom needed a new premise to house their support groups and events.
And so, in 2008, after an incredibly successful campaign that gained an overwhelming response from local businesses and the local community, the David Rayner Building was built on site at our flagship store, Great Shelford.
We thank all those who made the building possible in only 8 months from start to finish. The speedy work is a testament and result of the time, resources and funds generously given by those who understand the importance of the Cambridge Cancer Centre, their essential support groups and all their charitable work which continues to take place within the David Rayner build, to this day.

Fundraising Today
The Scotsdales Charitable Foundation continues to offer David Rayner Building to other organisations that require a premise to host events. Welcoming groups each week to enjoy workshops, lectures, and social gatherings within the building, making the David Rayner Building an invaluable asset to many across Cambridgeshire.
Alongside the upkeep of the David Rayner Building, the Scotsdales Charitable Foundation also works tirelessly to fund grants for organisations, charities and schools within the local community. Fundraising is therefore empirical for the Scotsdales Charitable Foundation to maintain the level of support required through grants for those whom need it.
That is why we’re making spring 2023 the season of fundraising with our staff charity challenge!
With our support, we’re putting the teams to the test to help raise our target of £10,000 by July.

Queen’s Green Canopy
The Queen’s Green Canopy, a nation-wide initiative launched in 2021 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, forming map across the UK of newly planted trees to commemorate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Four generations of the Rayner family represented Scotsdales Garden Centre as they planted a young tree in 25th May 2022 as part of the initiative. The family felt it was the perfect way of honouring the Queen’s achievements, but also the families achievements – from David Rayner founding the store over 50 years ago.
Today you can find the tree blooming on the grounds by the David Rayner Building, a positive symbol of future changes and growth. We look forward to seeing the tree grow over the years.
