Caring for Dogs During Summer Months

Caring for Dogs During Summer Months

Published: 1st June 2019

Every dog owner knows that dogs are more than just pets, they’re part of the family. We always try to do what’s best for our families, so why not our dogs? With the hot summer months coming up, we want to make helping your dogs as easy as possible. To start, we will be allowing dogs on leads into our Great Shelford store.

We will also have our amazing Pets team on hand to assist with queries relating to the best ways to keep your dog happy and healthy all summer long.

Should your dog wear a harness or lead?

Leads are fine to use if dogs are well behaved on their walks. However, if your dog pulls then a standard lead that connects to a collar can cause harm as the collar will pull into their throats. If you are considering getting a dog harness, then come instore to discuss options with us, we will be happy to fits harnesses to make sure your dog gets the most suitable equipment for them. There are different varieties of harness and not all of them will be suitable for all dogs. This isn’t specific to certain breeds, as all dogs are individuals.

Natural treats

We care about dog nutrition and health. The easiest way to keep your dog happy and healthy, is to make sure they’re well fed with natural food and treats. We sell raw meat and bones as well as a selection of packaged natural treats which are designed to provide the best possible source of nutrients to your dog. When providing raw meat for your dog, we advise everyone to take the same precautions that you would do when preparing raw meat for cooking. Wash all hands before and after handling and immediately was all equipment used. Avoid letting your dog lick you during or after eating.

Dealing with heat

Dogs don’t sweat in the same way as humans and will struggle to keep cool and hydrated in hot summer conditions. The key advice that we can give is to make sure your dog has plenty of fresh, clean water readily available at all times (whether at home or out for a walk). As a playful alternative, we now sell frozen yoghurt specifically designed for dogs from our Great Shelford and Horningsea stores. Why not come in and learn more about the products we have available this summer?

We also sell a selection of cooling mats and hydrating toys that be safely frozen prior to use to give dogs a cooling option.

Flea products

A worry for all pet owners is what to do when pests enter your home. Fleas are noteworthy problems for dogs, but in most cases these can be treated with a variety of over the counter flea products. We have a selection of items available instore and we’d be happy to discuss options with you.

We would like to note that flea treatments for dogs are not suitable for use on cats. If you have both cats and dogs, then each will need treatments specifically designed for them (we also sell cat products at all of our stores).

If your dog suffers from indigestion then it might be due to their eating habits. Not all dogs are able to pace themselves when eating and will clean their bowl too quickly for their stomachs to keep up. To aid with this, we offer a range of challenging feeding bowls, forcing your dog to work for their food. Not only does this slow the feeding to prevent indigestion, but it also provides them with a key source of stimulation. Bowls are suitable to be used with a variety of dog treats and food.
